The tengu derived their origins from the dog-like Chinese demons known as Tiangou. Between the 8th and 10th century, the image of the tengu shifted from that of a “canine monster that resembles a comet” to a man-bird hybrid.
During the Heian period, tengu were considered by Buddhism to be disruptive pranksters and harbingers of war. They would purposefully mislead the Buddhist monks to test their faith. Two centuries later, tengu were often associated with vengeful ghosts and spirits, and were caricatures of vanity or pride. These traits gave rise to the Japanese expression “tengu ni naru,” meaning “becoming a tengu.” The saying described a person who was
conceited and self-centered.
